Why I like the Ranger/Warrior Profession
MARCH 4 2006 EDIT: added a pic of my ranger.
*Ranger/Warriors are actually a fun profession to play, IMO. Most people in the game tell me " Meneldil, dude, why do you have your secondary as warrior? You just wasted a whole secondary profession, man!"
Well,
---Rangers, first of all, are much different than other professions, they really don't need secondary professions, they pack it all in their own skills. I add the warrior profession for a bit more fun.
---I admit that sometimes I get bored of shooting, and shooting, and shooting (plus the occasional trapping). Instead, I can fight with sword, axe, or hammer. (Though I haven't tried hammer much. I have, however, fought against R/W with hammers, and most of them fought hard.)
---The tactics attribute can help a lot, actually. Watch Yourself, for example, boosts my already high enough ranger armor an additional 20. And all you need is 4 adrenaline strikes.
---The running! Ranger/Warriors make excellent runners, probably close to the best. And even Sprint, a stength-attribute skill, lasts 8 seconds with 0 Strength. So now my ranger is going to be walking around with some *Bling-bling*
---Rangers usually take a profession for only 1-2 skills, but with the warrior profession you have access to a lot of different skills that can boost your ranger builds, but you can basically use most skills to your advantage because you can fight constantly with melee weapons, since you got the armor to be up in front.
---Surprisingly, the ''fun-level'' of R/W is very high, IMO. You can switch from a support fighter to the leader of the group! (Just remember, though, you can't be both at the same time, I mean you could, but your attribute points will be wasted if they concentrate on two weapons, IMO.)
*And then some people ask me "Well, Meneldil, why don't you just be a warrior/ranger?
Well,
---Warrior/Rangers aren't as good as fighting opponents when they use bows, since bow skills require energy, and you don't get expertise. But I do like W/R, just saying.
---As for me, I want to fight with the bow more, and I want to be more of a ranger. The melee weapons are for added fun, and more ways of playing.
---Also, being a Ranger/Warrior isn't permanent or anything. Once I ascend, I can switch my secondary, but for travelling through all of PVE, I suggest R/W for the most fun.
So I guess it all depends what you want to do more. Warrior/Rangers don't use the bow much, if any. Ranger/Warriors can use the bow more, and that is what I like.
So before you go ranting about R/W's, just remember, it's all about the fun.
As for myself, I don't like magic much, so I don't bother with Elementalists and Mesmers. I like Rangers, Warriors, and Monks. I actually do like Necromancers, but not as a primary. I plan to have a R/W AND W/R, in fact, lol.
*****
JAN 1. EDIT: Since I posted this forum, I have been noticing a TON more of R/W's out there, especially in CA, lol, not that I'm taking credit for restarting the R/W thing.

Ok...
I like Ranger/Warrior Builds too, but I don't play them much. Expertise is the main reason I do it.
I spam cyclone axe and I'd be happy.
And you are right. We play this game for fun, not real supremacy.

Why not? I don;t like casting long, slow, unwieldy spells either. Give me a Barrage, a Distracting Shot, and a Vampiric Short of Sheltering and I'll show you right where you can put your Meteor Storm :-P
Anyways, query. Do bow hits fill up Adrenaline? If they do, then perhaps some of the adrenal shouts and other thingies that aren't exclusively for melee could be great. For instance, the aforementioned Watch Yourself! would be great for a Bow Ranger tasked with accompanying Monks or other important squishies, if you could fill it with a bow.

I know you can fill it with wands and staffs. I imagine Bows would work too.

But really, I'm not much into magic, you don't have to like magic to like guild wars. I do, however, like fighting people who use magic, since generally I win as a ranger =)

Yes, adrenaline and bows go together, quite well. So yes, I get benefits from it.

I playerd a bit with an 11 axe / 10 tactics / 14 expertise R/W stance tank and you know, it works really well in PvE
The stances used are Escape {elite}, Whirling Defence and Shield Stance, and they have overlap so a stance is always up (escape -> whirling -> escape -> shield shance -> repeat). Add in a 16 def, +45 hits (stance), -2 damage (stance) collector's shield right there!
Some extra defence options I liked were Watch Yourself, Throw Dirt and Healing Signet
And for offence I liked Cyclone Axe, Disrupting Chop and Distracting Blow
Energy seems impossible to spend

yes. Hammer builds are wonderful. They deal damage up the hizay. Tigers fury + some hammer techniques + other stuff = massive killage. But something about it makes it seem like its harder to stay alive.

umm if this is for pve u can do all path and get some skills from each proffesion like i did be all proffessions at once couldnt u?
if this was pvp i can just change to other proffesions.
also r/w might be the only one i can consider putting frenzy in, while using bows of course.

*Points at Expertise-exclusive toys such as Whirling Defense, Lightning Reflexes, and Throw Dirt, as well as the excellent defensive Belly Smash hammer skill and other such stuff*
You sure you were having troubles staying alive? :-P. Would seem to me that you're better set to survive melee than most mindless Warriors are.

Yeah my guild leader, Skye Unknown, has been playing a R/W since the betas and has faired very well. He's the first person I'll call if I need to cap a skill or need a tank. The output damage is very high and the apply poision skill works very well.

I wish I went with Warrior secondary for my Ranger (went for Mesmer) so my Monk could take Mesmer as its secondary.
Seems to me R/W and Mo/Me are more fun to play than R/Me and Mo/W.
Oh I'm just weird - I forbid my characters to have same primary and secondary so if someone has a Necro secondary, no other character can have Necro secondary. My Mo/W has not ascended yet.

I play a R/W and he is one of most enjoyable characters Ive ever played.
The current version uses a hammer, Spams Irrestable Blow and Wild Blow continuously.
The damage output of this awsome.
Since I have High Beast Mastery for the Tigers Fury I add a pet to my Build and this adds even more damage.
Hmmm im thinking a pet attack would be good with this....

I made an r/w based on the ninja drawings of Shinobi in the fan art section, she uses a sword and shield and is by far the most powerful and diverse character i have. I just use expertise skills to evade damage and use all that extra ranger energy to keep up my attacks.

Yes, Indeed Ranger/Warriors R/Ws are very diverse, a Ranger itself is very diverse, and adding the warrior class adds so many options, in fact, im thinking the R/W is the most diverse type of character in the game since you can use almost every skill to your advantage. SO MANY BUILD MAKES ME HAPPy =)
You gotta help me out with a hammer build

Well for a hammer build, IMO, you need hammer attacks, tiger's fury, apply poison, evasion, and troll unguent. you could go without evasion and healing, but i dont think you would be nearly as effective.
